ChatGPT blew up in 2023. It grew so fast that schools didn’t know how to respond to it so they used AI themselves to try to block students from being lazy and using AI to write everything for them. But students also weren’t ready for AI. Again, they copied and pasted from ChatGPT. This results in zero learning and drastically reduces what you get out of school. In this post I’ll go over how I use AI for school responsibly to boost my learning in each major subject.
Writing
First, don’t copy and paste anything from ChatGPT. This is plagarism. Even if content ChatGPT makes looks different, it’s still taken from other people and compiled into something else. What you want to do for writing is try to get inspiration from AI. Tell it to prompt you to write instead of prompting it to write. This gives you infinitely more control over the output and is more rewarding as you’re the one making the actual content.
Math/Science
Don’t use AI for calculations. Hallucinations will mess everything up. Instead, ask AI to explain formulas to you and broader concepts. For example, you can ask ChatGPT to explain the difference between sine, cosine, and tangent to you in simple terms.
Social Studies
Fact check EVERYTHING. ChatGPT hallucinates a lot, more than a lot of people like to admit. With the (in)correct prompt, it can make something up completely and stand by it. I even got ChatGPT to say that Columbus colonized the Americas in 1776. I would suggest using ChatGPT to give you resources for your research, and do the actual research yourself.
Final Thoughts on AI for School
I think AI can be used for a lot of really cool stuff, but it should be used very responsibly. Doctors are using AI to help with surgeries, but not for complete automation. Putting everything in an AI’s control is not a good idea. Again, AI’s do hallucinate and are confindent in their hallucinations. Putting your education in ChatGPT’s control doesn’t actually help you learn, but just makes it easier to breeze through school without retaining any information. Use AI less as a cheating tool and more as a tutor, and maybe even have it play the role as a student and teach it to improve your understanding of a subject.
